O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges in the performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judge. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil wasn't in the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performances. The judge Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win of the Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the President Paul Martin immediately.
