She was a student of architecture at the time in Washington DC at Mount Vernon College but eventually gave up her studies in order to pursue a professional acting career. She made her film debut through a performance in Down Twisted. Her fame began to grow after playing one of the crucial parts in the horror slasher film Scream. The film was a massive commercial success and brought in around 11 times the budget. It was also well-received by critics. The actress played the same character in the films three sequels. Following her role as the lead in Friends She climbed new levels of notoriety. The show was nominated and awarded to her for several times. This series was hugely successful and aired over 10 years. Recent works of hers include an acting role in Mothers and Daughters, a drama film.
